Abstracts: January 5th, 2011

The authors look at what public administration will look like in 2020 and explore how governance can be strengthened by using different tools and approaches. They scrutinize demographic, budgeting and finance, globalization, and environmental trends.

New management challenges are placed under the microscope, as are new forms of organizations and new governance challenges. The future of local government is examined, as are issues concerning collaboration, human resources management, and enhancing diversity.

A group of authors analyze whether we have missed the boat in the areas of strategic planning and strategic management. Another group of authors return to the predictions of classic scholars concerning the future of the field and judge how accurate their assessments were.

The article concludes with the perspectives of modern scholars on the future of public administration as a scholarly field. Two certainties about public administration in 2020 are that traditional barriers will be dissolved and public administration will survive in a global context.
