Audit Commission ReportThe report explains how the new best value inspection service for local government will work and what it will be like to be inspected. The inspection service has been developed following extensive consultation with local government and key stakeholders, and nine months of field trials covering twenty-two authorities. Inspection will provide local agencies and the public they serve with an independent view of the quality of local services, and the likelihood that the services will improve. Inspection will aim to identify opportunities for improvement and motivate and encourage the authority to achieve these. Under best value, authorities are required to carry out reviews of all their services; the first inspections will begin as soon as authorities have completed reviews ready to inspect.
