INSPIRING COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME

Abstracts: May 18th, 2009

The New Opportunities White Paper made recommendations for raising the aspirations and attainment of young people in deprived communities. Recommendations were based on research by the Social Exclusion Task Force. Communities and Local Government are now seeking bids for grants to deliver the programme.

SHARED SERVICES LIBRARY OPENS UP TO LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Shared Service Architects has announced that Members and Officers in local authorities and partnering organisations are now able to access its in-house, online library of links to almost 200 moderated shared service documents from across the UK and overseas, without charge. The topics include finance, HR, estates management, procurement, legal services, travel services and marketing and communication.

GIVING COMMUNITIES A VOICE

Participatory budgeting now operates in 34 areas of the country and the aim is for it to be used by every local authority by 2012. It enables local people to make decisions on spending priorities that affect their lives right across the board, from local environmental issues and community facilities through to road safety measures and local crime initiatives.

BETTER CONNECTED

This report of the 2009 survey of local authority websites by the Society of IT Management reveals that 73 per cent of adults in the UK now have access to the internet, compared to 66 per cent last year. In some regions access is as high as 81 per cent.

This report of the working group who examined worklessness is published by Communities and Local Government.

The term worklessness describes the condition where a large number of people are excluded from the economy and work over long periods. Its causes differ from place to place, but it is often concentrated amongst disadvantaged groups and within local communities. Many people without work also experience multiple barriers to employment.
