WHAT’S IN A NAME – CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH PUBLIC SPACES

The New Local Government Network has set out a case for recognising the achievements of local citizens by naming streets and public places after them. This would help to build community cohesion and local civic pride, whilst giving areas a unique identity. It argues that names such as Shakespeare Way and Nelson Road help to celebrate identity and remember British history, and that we should do more to celebrate contemporary British icons.

NEIGHBOURHOOD RENEWAL FUND EVALUATION

The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy, which is funded by the Renewal Fund, has had a beneficial impact on the delivery of services in the 88 most deprived areas of the UK and has boosted partnership working. It has been less successful in the re-aligning and re-allocation of mainstream budgets.

OUTSOURCING TREND IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT SET TO GROW

More local authorities will outsource business processes and ICT in the next five years. This is a key finding from a report by Kable, a provider of public sector research.

Local government is the largest area of public sector ICT spend in the UK. It is estimated that the spend will reach 3.7b pounds in 2008/09, representing 22 per cent of all public sector ICT spend. Over the next five years spending is predicted to grow at 2.8 per cent to reach some 4.3b pounds by 2013/14.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE: MAKING A DIFFERENCE

DEBT PROBLEMS – HELP FROM CHARITIES

Research by charity Turn2us shows that people are six times more likely to increase their borrowing from banks than seek help from charities, if they were to face financial difficulties.

If they lost their income or were unable to pay their bills, 25 per cent of respondents said they would borrow from banks and 14 per cent would use credit cards. By comparison, only 4 per cent said they would think to seek help from a charitable source, despite the existence of over 3,300 charities that give grants to people in financial need. Less than half of those surveyed would access welfare benefits and around one in eight said there wasn’t anywhere they would be able to get money from.

TENANT EMPOWERMENT

New legislation will bring a sea-change in regulating social housing with the interests of the tenant rather than the landlord or service provider taking centre-stage.

Initially the new legislation will only affect housing associations or registered social landlords, but the government is committed to extending the regulation regime to cover local authorities as well within two years.

PUBLIC SECTOR LEADS THE WAY IN E-LEARNING

A report from IMC (UK) Learning Ltd. shows that public sector organisations are leading their private sector counterparts in the uptake of eLearning tools and instruments. Research revealed that more than 80 per cent of respondents from the public sector said their organisation is using bespoke eLearning content, with 67 per cent using eLearning authoring tools and 65 per cent using learning management systems. The corresponding figures for the private sector were 58 per cent, 44 per cent and 46 per cent.
