There’s been a move to bring those working in the health service and those in council social services closer together by linking their training.

Two new separate training bodies have been set up for each area – but for the first time they have been set the task of joint working some issues. And they have to produce a report each year on how they are getting on with each other.

Welcoming the move, Health Minister Paul Boateng said: These two organisations can also make a significant contribution to destroying the ‘Berlin Wall’ between social and health care, by working together on training and learning issues of joint interest.”

The two bodies are the Health Care National Training Organisation and the Training Organisation for Personal Social Services (TOPSS).

They will contribute to the implementation of Government education and training policy through developing national occupational standards, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships and setting sector skills targets.
