The DETR has altered rules for businesses, aimed at bringing down waste in packaging.

The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations are intended to double the UK’s recovery and recycling rates for packaging waste by 2001.

They are being reviewed early because of a question mark whether the UK is capable of meeting EC directives on recovering and recycling packaging.

The Advisory Committee on Packaging is recommending small changes, so that the fear of too much change does not discourage firms from investing in recycling and recovery methods.

Consultation is now being held on a number of options including changing recycling and recovery targets for business, how to deal with claims that this will put hardship on certain businesses and simplifying regulations where possible.
