In an example of joined-up thinking, the Health and Food ministries are enlisting new teachers to help them get across important messages to children.Trainee teachers are to be reminded of the importance of learning about food and nutrition in the classroom.

Guidance for new teachers has been produced jointly by the Department of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food and sent to all directors of all initial teacher training institutes and directors of education in local education authorities.

It is intended as a tool to help teacher trainers review and update existing courses dealing with nutrition in the curriculum or design new nutrition components for courses that do not currently cover the subject.

The guidance is also available to more experienced teachers free of charge. Copies for teachers are available from The Nutrition Unit, Department of Health, Skipton House, 80 London Road, London SE1 6LW.
