The Department of Health will lead the Government’s support for the United Nations Year of Older Persons. One of the topics it and other Government departments will tackle is how all public organisations can be encouraged to understand and act on the changing needs of older people.
Specifically, the year will see a review of how older people are treated, work on improving opportunities for Britain’s ageing population to keep on learning, and there’ll be an attempt to promote multigenerational initiatives.
The Prime Minister has already established a ministerial group that has published a consultation document, ‘Building a Better Britain for Older People’. In the coming year ministers will take part in local consultation events with older people.
Health Minister John Denham said: “Our society is ageing. The UN Year provides the opportunity to decide whether we see an ageing society as an opportunity or a burden.”
