Teachers and parents are being supported by the Internet in their efforts to improve reading skills. Tough literacy targets are an essential feature of the drive to improve standards. Estelle Morris, Education Schools Standards Minister, said: “Literacy isn’t just about books, new technologies mean that there are more and more worlds to explore”.

The National Year of Reading web site www.yearofreading.org.uk has introduced a magazine to give hints about creative writing. A link has been set up from this site to A Bugs Life site which gives a Holywood boost to simulate interest: www.bugslife.co.uk

All schools will have Internet access by 2002 when they are connected to the National Grid for Learning. In a move to combine fun and learning there will be a GridClub, an interactive facility for young people, combining broadcasting, the Internet and other learning resources.
