South Somerset District Council has appointed a partnership co-ordinator to support the district/county committee set up last year. The Committee is made up of 8 locally elected members from the District and County councils. Local people, Police and MPs take part in the discussions which cover issues such as the Crime and Disorder Act, Best Value and Planning Gain.

Bringing together the different levels of county district town and parish councils and creating more community involvement has helped to cut “red tape” which, in turn, has reduced costs and minimised delays in putting ideas into action. The Committee is able to respond quickly to issues of mutual concern.

The success of the Committee has resulted in a Somerset County Council proposal to establish similar partnership committees with Taunton Deane Borough Council and Sedgemoor, Mendip and West Somerset District Councils.
