Moor people are being encouraged to come forward as school governors and there are plans to provide them with better support and training. Reforms aimed at modernising the teaching profession will create a new and demanding role for governors. One possible outcome is a rise in resignations and it will be important to fill their places quickly.
Performance related pay for head teachers is being extended and new arrangements are due to start in September 1999. These arrangements will depend on an appraisal system operated by governors. There will be training for the governors who will also receive outside support in carrying out appraisals.
The make-up of governing bodies is also set to change. It is planned to create a broader leadership to include members of schools senior management teams.
