The Department of Social Security has responded to the call to Whitehall departments to get greener for the new millennium. The new greening strategy is set out in a Policy Statement, signed by Social Security Minister Angela Eagle and the Permanent Secretary Rachel Lomax.

The supporting Improvement Programme focuses on the organisation and
delivery of services. There will be a drive to conserve resources by reducing annual energy consumption in line with Government targets and by benchmarking water consumption as a preliminary to setting targets. All procurements will have to conform to the Policy Statement and whole life costs, not just the initial price, will be taken into account when deciding on value for money. Environmental performance will be a prime consideration in the design of new buildings.
