Local councils have provided most of the good practice ideas for improving services in the new ‘Good Practice Database’. The database has been set up by the Service First Unit in the Cabinet Office to help colleagues in all parts of the public sector to find out what others are doing. The database is at http://www.servicefirst.gov.uk/database/database.htm

Examples of good practice include: a strategy for Best Value service management, developed by Kirklees Council, and a demonstration Best Value in environmental health by Newark and Sherwood District Council, which draws on the business excellence model framework. Also Oxfordshire County Council is working with users and the local community to improve the information flow between local communities, enforcement agencies, arbitration schemes and central and local government.

The Service First Unit is looking for more examples of good practice from across the public sector to add to the database.
