A Home Office review of the fire service has found a disturbing lack of
equality and fairness. With black and ethnic minorities and women each
representing about 1% of the service it is failing to live up to the
expected standards. The findings of the review are critical of many aspects
of the management and culture within the fire service, including
relationships and leadership style. The criticisms apply across all the
organisations responsible for the fire service where there was a failure to
give leadership and direction.
Home Office Minister Mike O’Brien said he is looking to all involved to
work constructively to take forward the recommendations and he expects
early and measurable progress.
