2The new Minister for the Cabinet Office, Mo Mowlam, has made revitalising the campaign for better regulation in Europe one of her first priorities. She’s already been in Europe discussing the progress of reform in the European Commission with Commissioner Neil Kinnock – the Vice-President for Commission Reform.

She has indicated she is satisfied that the new commission is attaching real importance to improving the regulatory environment in the European Union which she said would one of the keys to success for the EU as well as for boosting economic growth at home.

The UK recently published a Guide to Better European Regulation, which sets out good practice when drafting, negotiating, implementing and presenting EC legislation. It forms a key part of the work to improve the way Europe makes rules heralded in the Modernising government White Paper. Copies are available from the Cabinet Office Regulatory Impact Unit by email (better.euro.reg@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk ), telephone (020 7 270 6239) or fax (020 7 270 1982).

The Cabinet Office Regulatory Impact Unit is already working with the Better Regulation Task Force – people from the business, voluntary and public sectors – to give Britain quality legislation with the minimum of red tape.
