Somerset County Council is getting ready for joined up working with other public sector bodies. A data network is being installed with a capability for expansion to include health and hospital trusts, further education establishments and other public agencies. The initial installation will link county council offices and departments, including schools, libraries and museums on 101 sites. It is due for completion by June. The 4.3m pound wide area data network, which is being supplied by Cable and Wireless, will use wireless technology to link 76 of the buildings. The remaining 25 buildings will be linked by cable. It is estimated that savings from using wireless in preference to cable will amount to some 1.6m pounds over 5 years. This will be the biggest single wireless network in the UK to date.
