The Cabinet Office is trying to put an end to the confusion caused by the plethora of quality schemes managers across the public sector can use to improve standards of service. The Modernising Government Quality Schemes Task Force was set up a year ago to work out how the Charter Mark, The EFQM Excellence Model(r), Investors in People and ISO 9000 can have a collective impact on raising the quality of public services.

Its recommendations just published include combined assessment where appropriate, new guidance on how quality schemes can help deliver Best Value, and a decent set of general guidance on quality schemes and their objectives and what, if any, relationship there is between the schemes.

A steering group within the Cabinet Office will be taking forward the recommendations and reviewing progress in December of this year.
