More than a hundred Primary Care Groups put in bids to work with the National Primary Care Development Team, which will pioneer the developing and sharing of best practice in a systematic way.The successful 40 chosen will be able to appoint a project manager from central funding and have access to expert advice and support.

Key aims are: to improve access for patients by ensuring that 90% of patients can access their primary healthcare professional the next working day, or the same day if it is urgent, to tackle coronary heart disease, and to cut waiting lists and times by managing demand and capacity.

The Government says that the impressive level of support shows that locally, the primary healthcare service wants to play an active part in shaping a modern NHS.
