Those parts of the NHS delivering non-clinical services cannot hope to escape from the Government’s drive to raise standards. The Health Minister John Denham has outlined how the Audit Commission and Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) will share the job of improving the whole hospital environment.

Raised standards of expectation and tougher inspection will be the mechanism to bring about change.

The Government wants reforms of hospital catering to allow patients more choice, flexibility and convenience. New standards for hospital cleanliness and infection control will be subject to specific inspection. There are also plans to benchmark services in each
hospital against the best to ensure high quality and value for money.

The announcements were made at the Annual Conference of the Healthcare Estates and Facilities Management Association in Telford.
