As part of the NHS Zero Tolerance Zone, launched in September 1998, Trusts are adopting a range of measures to make the public aware that violence is unacceptable and to assure staff that the issue is being tackled.Staff in high risk areas are being given prevention of violence training, rooms are being set aside for patients showing high levels of aggression and mobile phones, pagers and personal alarms are being issued.

All Trusts were required to have systems in place to record incidents by April 2000, so that violence reduction targets can be monitored.
