The approach of tackling re-offending on both sides of the prison gate has had limited success and renewed effort is now being applied to the process. The overlap in the work of the Prison and Probation services has not been exploited as it might have been because the two services have quite different cultures and diverse priorities. Any attempt to introduce a unified approach to re-offending is consequently a major challenge. The latest initiative is a drive to bring the respective inspection bodies closer together. The drive was launched with the issue of a consultation document:- Inspecting the Work of the Prison and Probation Services: Options for the Future. It sets out a range of ideas on how the two inspectorates might work more closely together. Consultations ends on 31 October 2000.
