The National electronic Library for Health (NeLH) has launched the first of a series of professional portals aimed at nurses and other health professionals. The Speech and Language Portal (www.nelh.nhs.uk/speechtherapist) offers a convenient and organised view of information tailored for speech and language therapists needs.

During 2001 Portals will be created for nurses, midwives, health visitors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, dieticians, orthoptists, psychologists and radiographers. Access is via the World Wide Web and the majority of the site is accessible to both NHS and non-NHS staff.

Speech therapists will be able to access the very latest versions of a range of materials aimed at students, researchers, academics and practitioners in the health and medical sciences.

In addition to these resources therapists will be able to access clinical guidelines, discussion groups and specialist virtual branch libraries.

NeLH is a programme of work coming from the NHS Information Authority. The government’s Information Strategy for the NHS announced the intention to introduce a National electronic Library for Health (NeLH) by March 2002.
