A new research project promises to bring voting from your desk or TV that bit closer. The Government, the Electoral Commission, Improvement and Development Agency, Local Government Association and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) are funding a seven-month project led by De Montfort University in Leicester to explore the possibilities for remote voting.

The Electoral Commission Report on the 2001 election, with its low turnout, identified ‘a need for greater flexibility about when and how we vote’.

A survey of members of the public, for their views on how the voting system should be modernised, should begin in the next few days.

Pilots run in recent elections showed that when people were offered the opportunity of a postal vote instead of having to visit a polling centre, the turnout did improve.
