After bringing sweeping changes through the schools system, the
Department for Education and Skills is looking to bring the same demands
of performance improvement to further education (FE).
A new Director of Teaching and Learning is to be appointed to head a new
standards unit for FE. The director will work closely with Ministers and
the Learning and Skills Council to transform standards in post-16
learning by identifying and developing successful and innovative methods
of teaching and learning. The director will be supported by a team of
30, including staff seconded from the post-16 sector itself.
The unit will develop new teaching strategies for particular curriculum
areas and ensure teachers and lecturers are trained in their use.
It’s a similar model to what has happened in schools and which Ministers
are satisfied has been demonstrated to show improvement. The director
will be paid up to 85,000 pounds a year.
