The UK, actively pursuing its own better regulation agenda, has welcomed a new European Action Plan on Better Regulation. The plan contains measures to be implemented by the Commission, as well as proposals for actions by the European Parliament and the Member States.

UK Ministers are hoping for the same cultural shift in policy making in Europe as is being implemented here – making commonplace processes such as regulatory impact assessments and minimum consultation periods – thus helping avoid new laws becoming a bureaucratic nightmare for those affected by them.

There is also a commitment to assessing the impact of proposed policy measures. It is hoped that, again as in the UK, there is a move towards more evidence-based policy-making to produce appropriate policy solutions to real-world problems.
