The Government wants to use new technology like the internet to re-invigorate people’s interest in public life.It has published ‘In the service of democracy, a consultation paper on a policy for electronic democracy’.

The paper is about showing how technology can deepen and enhance citizens’ involvement. The strategy is to offer new ways of participating which will complement rather than replace existing structures.

Government action is proposed in two main areas, e-Participation and e-Voting. The paper offer ideas about how the mechanisms of democracy can be enhanced, by modernising voting methods, improving access to ballots and broadening the scope of government consultations.

Copies of the paper are available on the new e-Democracy website – www.edemocracy.gov.uk.

There will be public consultation on the document until 31st October.
