The Department for Education and Skills has set up an Innovation Unit, whose job will be to seek out and encourage those schools coming up with innovative ideas. The unit is being set up to reflect the fact that the best ideas aren’t happening centrally, but are being introduced by teachers, sometimes despite central edicts.

The unit will specifically be looking at ideas that make a real difference in raising the quality of teaching and learning and which could be repeated widely.

Lead Director Mike Gibbons has extensive experience of work in schools in England and is currently principal of the British School of Brussels, an international school for 3-18 year olds.

Maureen Burns has most recently been Head of Policy and Communications with the General Teaching Council. Other senior team members include a research manager for BBC Education Policy, a former county director of education, and two headteachers, brought in to ensure that new innovations are grounded in the reality of school practice.
