The Government is attempting to forestall a threatened fire service strike by authorising an independent review on pay.Firefighters are calling for pay rises of up to forty percent, which they say are needed to bring them up from a very low starting point.

Like modernisation of the Police Service, the agreement by Government to look at pay levels is tied to an improvement agenda.

Professor Sir George Bain will conduct the review, with a brief to inquire into and make recommendations on the future organisation and management of the fire service.

The review will look how the service can be delivered to maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
