COMMUNITIESThe man who will be responsible for delivering the government’s strategy for new approaches to housing, communities and regeneration, has been named as Richard McCarthy, currently Chief Executive of the Peabody Trust. He will take up the post of Director General of Sustainable Communities working in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
The post has been created following publication in February of the Government’s Sustainable Communities Plan. Mr. McCarthy will work with teams across the ODPM, with other government departments and with the public, private and voluntary sectors. He will take up the new job on a part time basis initially, becoming full time from the beginning of November.
He will have specific responsibility for the Thames Gateway, the three other growth areas in the South East – Milton Keynes, Ashford and the M11 corridor – as well as the Market Renewal Pathfinders programme and overall responsibility for the delivery of the Sustainable Communities Plan.
He has been Chief Executive of the Peabody Trust since 1999 and before that was Group Chief Executive of the Horizon Housing Group. He chairs the National Housing Federation and is a memberof the Joseph Rowntree Foundation Housing and Neighbourhood Committee.
