CALL TO RE-THINK EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION FOR Y0UNG RUNAWAYS

Some 100,000 children and young people run away from home every year, but there are only nine refuge places in the country. The Children’s Society, in a report commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, calls for a national safety net for runaways in need of somewhere safe to stay.

The Society of IT Management wants public bodies to recognize that separate ICT infrastructures are not needed for every organisation. It is particularly critical of the 433 local councils in the UK where there has been a marked lack of enthusiasm for sharing services.

After a decade or more when government talked incessantly of ‘targets’, it now seems that everyone is talking ‘outcomes’. Yet many deputy heads of secondary schools, many assistant chief constables, many hospital managers or local authority heads of service are understandably suspicious—is this shift in language just the latest waft of Whitehall hot air?
