COUNCILS SIGN UP TO NEW CITY REGION

The ten local authorities in Greater Manchester will sign a groundbreaking deal today, giving the area more powers and responsibilities devolved from central government. The agreement will unite the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities behind a formal arrangement.

CCTV PILOT AIMS TO PROTECT HEALTH STAFF IN WALES

A pilot scheme is being launched in parts of Wales to use CCTV to help reduce violent and aggressive behaviour towards health service staff. The project, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, will see cameras installed in four accident and emergency departments across Wales and five ambulances in Cardiff.

GETTING THE POVERTY MESSAGE ACROSS THROUGH THE MEDIA

Public understanding of poverty in the UK is limited and this makes it difficult to generate support for tackling the issue. The media has a key role to play in publicity and it is most effective when it presents the views, experiences and opinions of people with experience of poverty. The authors explain the opportunities to disseminate material in the traditional and ‘new’ media and describe the roles and responsibilities of voluntary and community organisations in helping journalists find case study individuals.

COUNCILS WANT POWERS TO TACKLE YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

Local authority leaders are calling for more powers to allow them to help tackle rising youth unemployment. The Local Government Association said a coherent approach was needed to deal with the number of 16 to 24-year-olds who are out of work.

STUDY LOOKS AT HOW CHILDRERN IN CARE LOSE LINKS WITH FAMILIES

The longer children stay in care the more likely they are to lose all contact with their parents, other family members and friends, the Children’s Rights Director says today. In a new report Dr Roger Morgan says once children have been in care for more than two years they have much less contact with their birth family and those in care for more than six years are likely to lose all links.

NEW FUND AIMS TO BOOST VOLUNTEERING IN HEALTH AND CARE SERVICES

A new funding model has been unveiled in a move to widen and strengthen investment in volunteering in health and social care. The new Health and Social Care Volunteering Fund is designed to renew the focus on volunteering projects in the NHS and social care by managing the grants system centrally.
