CITIZENSHIP SURVEY

People feel less empowered, but believe cohesion in their neighbourhood is increasing according to the Citizenship Survey from Communities and Local Government.

In the year ending March 2009, 39 per cent of people felt they could influence decisions in their local area compared to 44 per cent in 2001. At the national level 22 per cent of people felt they could influence decisions affecting Great Britain compared to 25 per cent in 2001.

TAKING CANCER CARE INTO THE COMMUNITY

This programme is now available to view on egovtv.tv, the online television channel for public service modernisation. It describes a pioneering mobile chemotherapy service from cancer charity Tenovus.

The charity uses a hi-tech mobile clinic from specialist supplier EMS to deliver treatment in the heart of local communities. The mobile unit, which houses comprehensive facilities, opens up to over 50m2. Several patients can be treated at the same time.

UNDERSTANDING PERSONAL HEALTH BUDGETS

Trials have been launched of personal health budgets which make it easier for patients to get the NHS care that they think will help them. They are complementary to direct payments and personal budgets for care and support from social services. They have been introduced because many people have said that having more say over how money gets spent on their care and support makes them feel more involved and more positive and it does not cost any more than providing services in the normal way.
